i make this eyes open movie poster and it takes like two hours to finish. i know it doesn’t look really nice but i hope you get some ideas how to make movie poster since like i got a lot of request how to do this.
Step 1: Choose pictures/screencaps etc. i choose screencaps, it’s from wonderstruck video. you can also find hq screencaps on homeofthenutty.com
Step 2: Resize the picture. make sure the width is 245px. the height doesnt really matter. it’s because i want to upload it using photoset or you can also resize it to 500px. my screencaps is 245px width and height 310 px now.
Step 3: duplicate the laye(layer>duplicate layer). I use topaz clean and then sharpen(filter>sharpen>sharpen). you don’t have to do it so, just sharpen the picture if you don’t have topaz.
Step 4: right click the duplicate layer and click merge down. duplicate the layer again and go to filter>blur>motion blur. set the angle to 5 and distance 10. change the opacity to 51% and fill 30%.
Step 5: add coloring to the picture. i use coloring from this, it’s not really similar because i add up more color balance layer, mix some more psd and add textures just like you see on the movie poster i make.
Step 6: Open this texture in photoshop, change the blend mood to soflight, opacity 44% and fill 100%
Step 7: Add this texture and set it to screen at the opacity of 38% and fill 37%. I also add up this grainy texture to screen at 37% and fill 37%. you can add up any textures to make your poster more interesting and creative. It actually depends on your image. feel free to change all the opacity and fill to your liking because every image is different.
Step 8: After you’re satisfied with your coloring and texture(basically the whole thing), it’s time to add text, credit, title etc.
Step 9: Think of the title and the date it’ll be on theaters. lets start with the text at the top of the poster. i put ‘from the creators of dear john’. you just need to replace dear john, its okay if you put dear john there if you cannot think of any. i use castellar for the fonts which is already in photoshop and 9 pt for the size. make sure the color of the text is white because white is the most common color for movie poster. i also recommend you to use biondi(it’s already in photoshop)
Step 10: lets work with the title next. my title is eyes open. it’s in caps lock. you can use fancy fonts for this, feel free to download it on dafont.com. there are so many beautiful fonts there. so after i write EYES OPEN i duplicate the layer. right click on the duplicate layer and click blending option. search for outer glow. these are my setting. click ok and change the opacity of the duplicate layer to 68% for opacity and fill 100%
Step 11: Now for the movie credits. just download this psd and drag it on the poster. using the move tool put it at the bottom. you can download movie poster fonts from here, here and here. i also find brushes for movie poster, you can download here, it’s also for your own reference.
Step 12: It’s now for the text at the very bottom, the date. so once you’ve finished thinking for the date. write it like ”in theaters may 13” in caps lock.
Step 13: you can still do some adjust in coloring, texture if its still looks like crap. lastly flatten the image(layer>flatten image). save it as png and you’re done. ask me if you’ve any difficulties.
some tips in creating movie poster
*choose a really hq pictures/caps. if the quality is low, try using other caps because sharpening the image doesn’t always work.
*avoid adding too much coloring. well, sometimes it does look good and sometimes no.
*experiment. the most important parts. play around with textures, pictures and the blend mood in photoshop.
*practice. practice first before you do anything. just try, for example use this tutorial to practice and i’m sure you’ll be a lot better and can create you own especially in terms of creativity.
TEXTURES. here are some film grainy textures i found perhaps you can use this for the movie poster?
